This game was quite an important game, considering it's what made RPGs cool in America. If you've played this game, or want to know more, post here.
The movie based off this game is coming out in like, 9 days on DVD! Who knows if it's good, but we can hope.

On a scale of 1-10 what would you give this game? How good is this game compared to other FF games? What kind of battle system does it have?

What's one, what's ten? Really, don't play this because you like Final Fantasy stories. Play it because you like a game where you can actually feel your magic and strength improve as you slaughter the evil side bosses in the game. I'd give it a 5 on story, 'cuz it's got some flaws; a 9 on game engine, 'cuz ya' gotta' luv' th' syt'm.
Again, don't compare it to other games. It's like comparing the movie to the games.
Your main characters alone can only level up, and use and increase their limit breakers (awesome fun!). The weapons and armor they hold have slots that they put 'materia' in. Materia can have magic, skills (like quadra-slash), or abilties that help other materia (like 'all' materia makes magic hit all enemies or allies). Materia levels up, giving you more abilties if it's equipped.
Try it!

Is it turn based or does it have a real time battle system? Or does it have both?

Sorta both. It runs off of the good ol' ATB (Active Time Battle) system. Your turn gauge fills up, then you can choose your command. After a certain time, you attack. It's like FF IV-IX (and maybe II. I forget) FF X-2 has a faster version of this that I don't like (but you can change the battle speed, so it's okay.)
